Obscure Holidays: Alternate Wednesdays, August - December 2000
The Pink Pony @ 176 Ludlow Street NYC

The Exhibitionists presented their Obscure Holiday Series in conjunction with the Jump Arts' first Jump Women Series. The Jump Women's Series 2000 performances took place every other Wednesday from August through December of Y2K at the Pink Pony, a performance space in the lower east side of Manhattan. One of these events each month was devoted to The Exhibitionists Obscure Holiday Series.

The Obscure Holiday Series was the first performance series The Exhibitionists collaborated. The theme varied in interpretation by the different curators. Dragon Boat Festival and Dia del los Muertos were based on holidays that were obscure in the U.S. while St. Valentine's Day and Veteran's Day highlighted unconventional perspectives of traditional holidays, and Routine & Repetition was a utilitarian holiday invented by two Exhibitionists.

December 6: DAY OF THE DEAD
Curated by Jennifer Laskey

Dia del los Muertos is an ancient Mexican holiday that celebrates children and the dead. Families gather at the cemetery to clean and decorate the gravesites, light candles, plant flowers and socialize with the community. They commemorate their dead with storytelling and ofrendas, offerings set out for the returning souls. It is as much a celebration of death and the departed souls as it is of life itself. MORE>>

November 8: ROUTINE & REPETITION
Curated by Brynna Tucker & Heather Weathers

Art is not a celebration of things appreciated by an elite number. Routine and repetitive actions in everyday life become the art work, and often, the autobiography. It is as important to live in the moment as it is to view life and art in a longer time period. An isolated gesture is powerful when viewed out of context. MORE>>

October 25: MEMORIAL DAY
Curated by Jen Deaderick

For thousands of years humans have subscribed to belief systems that condemn killing. Still killing seems to be more popular than ever. The 2000 years since the birth of Christ have been the bloodiest in human history. Writer and comedian Jen Deaderick and special guests explore war and why people seem to like it. MORE>>

September 13: ST. VALENTINE'S DAY
Curated by Fonta Hadley

Tonight's Valentine's Day show honors a traditional day of love as well as a less conventional but equally celebratory V-Day. Inspired by Eve Ensler, writer of "The Vagina Monologues," [a collection of monologues based on a series of interviews with women about their vaginas], the first V-Day took place on Valentine's Day in 1998. It is an organized response against violence toward women. MORE>>

August 16: DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
Curated by Fay Ku

With its races, food and festivities, this Chinese holiday always seemed to me to belie its dark origins: it sprung from the suicide of a beloved but (wrongfully) disgraced scholar. This obscure holiday pays tribute to its ghost, submerges to the underwater where he remains ignorant of the the joyous holiday that he had inspired. With fellow Exhibitionists and friends of the Exhibitionists, we transformed the space with art, installation and music. MORE>>
